Working on my Spanish – The Cuban Craziness

Working on my Spanish – The Cuban Craziness

On a trip to Cuba a few weeks ago I had fine chances to make use of my ability to speak some Spanish and the lessons are starting to become slightly useful. While being able to do the most important things such as ordering food and getting around town which would have been much harder without being able to speak Spanish.

The best part of the trip was where I discovered, that I could understand more than I thought I could previously and just how humorous some of the people in Cuba can be with their joking around.

I spend roughly an hour listening to the driver tell me and some of the other passengers in the car that he was a fan of Donald Trump, that he thinks that Obama is weak. That the current president of Cuba Raul is gay. That Hugo Chavez had to come to Cuba to get a penis transplant. That Havana has 2 million people and 1 million police. That we should go out in the evening and chase down some Cuban women. He offered that they are very many and very good 18 years old to 30 years. I declined to go with them of course.

A very weird conversation on the ride, but I do see one thing is that I can understand more than what I thought I could previously. That’s what the joy of learning another language really is and that’s the ability to joke with and understand the humor that another culture has.

So here is to learning more Spanish. At some point in the near future, I plan to go to a Spanish speaking country and live there for several months to get my Spanish language skills up to par.
