The Dream to Drive Around the world
I have been having this one little dream that I am looking more and more into which is to travel around the world by overland motorhome. And when I speak of a motorhome I am not referring to the kind that your grandmother and grandfather drove on their way to Florida each winter. The kind of motorhomes I am thinking about are basically full blown 4×4 or 6×6 adventure vehicles. These are luxurious RV’s that are built on the chassis of a military vehicle. So the short story is that this would be a great gift to myself for the big 40th Birthday. There is one design, in particular, that has caught my eye and that is one that this couple started to build and is currently living in and getting ready to drive from Alaska to Argentina in.
If I were to build one of these for myself I would start off by buying the military vehicle from one of the auctions that the army does and sells these incredible trucks for less than $10,000 dollars. From there I would drive it to Mexico with all of the parts that I think that I would need to build the RV portion of the RV and then have it built and assembled there in Mexico. Where the labor would be cheaper to build out the steel frames and all of the woodworking and electric systems of the truck. The more I thought about it I realized that the labor is a massive part of the cost of building one of these and since I don’t have the skills to built it myself nor the time to build it myself. The best way would be to go to somewhere with cheaper labor and plenty of skilled people. I would bring my own plans and I figure with a month or two of work could have a completed motorhome for far less than the cost of an EarthRoamer RV which goes for somewhere between 300k and a million dollars. This a shortcut to the idea.
